Erik Buell considering a 250cc machine?

If he does build another learner bike, at least Erik Buell can start from a clean slate, and not try to build another single-cylinder cobbled together from V-twin parts.

First he built the learner-friendly, but much-maligned Buell Blast. Now, some people are saying Erik Buell may start work on another beginner bike – this time, a 250.

At least, that’s what Asphalt and Rubber is claiming. We know one thing for sure: Kawasaki’s 250cc Ninja is the top-selling sportbike in the U.S., and Honda’s new CBR250R seems to be very well-received as well. There’s even a new Canadian spec series built around Big Red’s quarter-litre machine.

Erik Buell has surely seen the surge in small bike sales, and he must realize it’s going to be tough for his company to succeed if they only sell high-priced exotic sportbikes. Add to that a recent swing in protectionist trade policy in the U.S., and the timing could be right to release a bike to compete with Japan for that 250cc segment.

If they build it, we just hope they’ll lend us one for the next Dawn ‘Til Dusk rally…
