It used to just be about the glory, a big cash prize, and staying alive on the road, but the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge has just taken another step forward – now, the rally is going to be on television.

The Challenge’s organizers announced this week that they’ve signed a deal with Academy-award nominated film and television producer David Roma to put together a feature-length documentary about the rally, which starts Aug. 5 in Arizona, finishing in Nova Scotia after running through all 48 states in the continental US.

The rally’s organizers are also hoping to put together a television mini-series and an interactive website that allows people around the world to keep track of the riders’ progress.

It should be interesting to see if the rally changes, now that it’s going to be on TV. Before this year, the top racer took home a boatload of cash, but that’s changed – the top 25 riders get a payout this year. Add a chance at reality TV fame to that equation, and the Harleys-only rally may take a whole different look very quickly – hopefully not like Jersey Shore.

Roma’s previous TV credits include Miami Ink, Hogan Knows Best, and Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood, so it’s unlikely he’s looking at a highbrow, artsy production.
