Fatal Calabogie crash under investigation

Police haven't been able to find their comrade's stolen bike yet.
Police say charges are unlikely after Monday's death.

The Ontario provincial coroner is investigating after a track day crash at Calabogie MotorSports Park left one rider dead, one rider seriously injured, and one with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash occurred Monday around 10 a.m.; details are sketchy as the investigation is ongoing, but an eyewitness report suggests that a faster rider may have made contact while passing a slower one, which resulted in the crash and involved several other riders.

The dead rider has been identified as 42-year-old Calvin Essex of London, Ont. The Ontario Provincial Police says charges are not expected.

The track day was run by Toronto’s Pro 6 Cycle — they hold an exclusive three-year contract with the park — and have a good reputation for safety and hosting well organized track days.

Since the Calabogie track opened in 2006, the track’s president and general manager says there hasn’t even been a serious injury before, never mind a death. If or how this tragic accident will effect the track’s willingness to host motorcycle events in the future remains to be seen.

That’s a load of nonsense. There were three riders seriously injured in an Amateur national race there three years ago; one of them is still undergoing surgeries. Life-threatening, no. Serious? Damn right. Said injuries were caused by one of the too-close guardrails, as I recall.
