Day 5 of the GS Trophy was a day of mixed emotions.

Today’s ride provided some of the best scenery and trails yet. Tomorrow will be a long day.

The ride from Phinda to tonight’s camp was absolutely spectacular. We rode serpentine dirt roads and winding trails, the weather was splendid and the scenery absolutely breathtaking.

Although Team Canada team members were blown away by the great ride, they didn’t fare so well in the special tests.

Today’s special tests were more light-hearted in nature than the previous tests and included a rear-wheel swap between two machines, a spear throw while riding and a canoe race.

Team Canada fared better in the spear throw (riders had to ride a short oval course, picking up a spear and chucking it at a target without stopping), and we finished fifth in the canoe race.

These results, combined with the results of the second photo contest (there’s one more shot of the day to vote on at gstrophy.com) were enough for Team Canada to hold on to fourth place with 99 points.

The top three teams are Team Nordic with 108 points followed by Team South Africa with 110 and the UK still holds on to the lead with 114.

Despite today’s special test results, the three members of Team Canada are in high spirits and are recovering quickly from the injuries sustained in the last couple of days.

Tomorrow is a long day with 380 km to the next camp and three scheduled special tests. The boys are pumped and ready to give it all they’ve got. Stay tuned.
