Harley-Davidson has appointed Keith Wandell, of Johnson Controls Inc., as its top executive amid a high-level shake-up spurred by the looming retirement of their top guy. Wandell, 59, steps in as CEO for retiring Jim Ziemer on May 1.

H-D also appointed Enrico D’Onofrio, 51, as managing director of MV Agusta in Italy. D’Onofrio was previously the chief financial officer of Ducati.

Wandell is lucky to be given the job at H-D, as Johnson Controls, which makes car seats and other automotive products, is about to shut down 10 of its factories and fire about 4,000 workers.

Matthew Levatich, 44, has been appointed as president and chief operating officer of Harley, and James McCaslin, 60, moves from the president’s office at H-D to the position of executive VP for corporate product planning.
