Ben Spies hits the bricks on Suzuki GSV-R

American Suzuki team rider Ben Spies was the only Moto GP rider to take part in an initial tire test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 2.

Moto GP rules require that a tire test must be run on a track that’s new to Moto GP racing. But no designated team Moto GP riders are alllowed to take part in it. Spies is a late wild card entry in the series, following the temporary retirement of Loris Capirossi from the Suzuki team due to injury. Spies normally competes in the U.S. superbike series, but will likely join the Moto GP ranks next year.

Former World Champion 500GP rider Kevin Schwantz was there to provide advice to Spies.

Quickest rider during the test was an Italian, Niccolo Canepa, riding with Bridgestone tires on a Ducati Desmosedici GP8 with a time of 1:44.1756. Spies was 0.05 second slower.

The first Red Bull Indianapolis Moto GP event will take place September 12-14.
